Dear Partners in Ministry:
As 2014 began, my focus was on how to begin evangelizing downtown Jeremie where approximately 71,000 reside. Myself with the other ESMI church planters strategically divided the city into different sectors and we began looking for small group facilitators for these areas. We are thankful to our US teaching pastors who came in January to teach us on how to implement the “Discovery Bible Study.” There were about 40 who attended this training. When we followed up the next week, we had well over 100 facilitators present. All were ready to be a part of God’s plan for the city of Jeremie. In late March, we had another meeting but this time, because of the growing number, we had to divide these meetings over a three-week period. The number of Bible Study facilitators has now grown to about 300! Praise God for this spiritual hunger in understanding His Word and desiring to share it with others.
At our last meeting, we had facilitators from two of the roughest neighborhoods in Jeremie. Continue to pray with us to be in step with God’s plan in preparation for a church plant in the city of Jeremie by 2015.
On May 6-9, we will have several US teaching pastors return to continue the training on using the “Discovery Bible Study” (DBS) in small groups. There, we will focus on the 40-50 key leaders to oversee the growing number of small groups all across the city of Jeremie, and introducing this study to 50 ESMI pastors/leaders from Gonaives and Cayes .
4E’s:EVANGELISM-Church Planting and Leadership Development
We also praise God for the resources that came in to purchase land for two of our preaching points in surrounding villages of Jeremie: Parrotti, a preaching point of El Shaddai at the Dr. David Nicholas Chapel and Birotte, a daughter church of the El Shaddai Church at Bonbon; and one
preaching point in Gonaives. The El Shaddai Church at Bonbon now has a total of four preaching points with an average attendance of 70 at each site. One of our partners also blessed two seminary students overseeing the sites in Bonbon with scholarships to the University of Jeremie (UJ) Seminary.
4E’s: EDUCATION: Update on the University of Jeremie
Of all the schools of study, our largest enrollment is the School of Agriculture with 65 students. Here is a photos of the students reviewing their semester project. For their next project, the students are now preparing 1,500 seedlings which they will plant in one area of Jeremie that has been stripped of its trees.
We are thankful for the end of year gift from one ministry partner that has enabled up to hire teaching and administrative staff that will not only assist us at the university but will also serve to strengthen the work at the ESMI headquarters in Jeremie. Here is Pastor Jean Wilner Guerrier. He was born in Jeremie but spent well over 20 years in the US before returning five years ago. He has his MA in New Testament, BA in Business Administration and an AA in Political Science. He comes with 15 years experience as a manager and serves not only as ESMI’s Staff Administrator but also as a professor in the School of Business.
Meet Pastor Pierre Mackson Jeune
He was also born in Jeremie. He is a pastor, a lawyer, teacher and electrician and comes with ten years experience as a professor and
coordinator of the professional/vocational school in Jeremie. These two men are part of the team of 17 at the ESMI Headquarters in Jeremie and UJ.
Sharon, who home schools our twin girls and assists administratively with ESMI, also joined the teaching staff in January on a part-time basis, teaching ESL to the evening students. The evening students are: school administrators, bank directors, teachers, businessmen, office workers, etc. from the within city of Jeremie. Here is Sharon teaching them about the use of the Simple Present vs. Present Progressive Tense as they make pancakes. Most of the students were having this for the first time. The ESL is a needed course. Pray that ESMI can have two American teachers to assist in the ESL/IEP program for 2014-2015.
4E’s: EMPATHY: MEDICAL MISSIONS and ORPHAN CARE
Praise God for our ministry partner who purchased well over one thousand French children literature. The books were selected by Scholastic Books and distributed to three Orphan/Children Village Sites: Cambry, Fayeton and Lundi. What a blessing this is for our children as they explore the world through books in their own language!
Our medical teams are very much a part of our church planting efforts in Jeremie. Because of their presence in a small village on the outskirts of Bonbon, there are now four new church plants. What else has our medical teams done? Last year, they were involved in the training of student nurses from the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing. This opened the doors for ESMI to develop a relationship with their faculty and for me to have the honor of being the commencement speaker for their very first graduating class. We also had the privilege of opening our home to these 55 graduates for a meal and a time of encouragement on a job well done in completing four years of studies. The time of fellowship was also an opportunity to share the Gospel.
4E’s: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT-Chicken Farm Update
The chicken farm in Jeremie continues to do well. Of course, there are always setbacks such as pests, namely rats and snakes eating well over 500 of the chicks, and the seasonality of the market. ESMI is still researching other business opportunities to empower the communities where we minister.
As we look ahead to May and the summer months, we covet your prayer support for the following:
1) May 6-8: Safe travels, blessed time of teaching for US teaching pastors on DBS and for ESMI key leaders
2) May 9-12: My father, Bresile St. Germain, will preach at ESMI’s Third Annual Convention for the Grand-Anse Department.
The theme: “Be Transformed to Transform.” Those of you who have received our brochure know that our 2020 goal’s theme is “Transforming Haiti One City at a Time.” To do this, we hope to have a presence in all ten departments on the island. Already, ESMI is present in five. My father will also celebrate his 80th birthday and 59 years in ministry on May 20. Pray that God continues to keep him strong as he still maintains a busy preaching schedule.
3) May 13-15: Third Annual Pastor’s Conference in Grand-Anse for all ESMI pastors and church planters
4) May 30-Aug 6: Safe travels and blessed ministry of our summer teams in Cayes, Gonaives and Jeremie
5) June 2-5: Pre- and Marital Counseling for ESMI Pastors and seminary students
6) Pray for one or two missionary ESL teachers for the university
7) God’s guidance, wisdom and provision for the growing work
Thank you for keeping all of us at ESMI in your thoughts and prayers, and for making us part of your financial contribution. God’s Spirit continues to move in this work of evangelism. Thank you for being a very needed part of His work for His glory!
A blessed Easter to you and yours!
Because He Lives,
Dony and Sharon
