“He fulfills the desire of those who fear Him; He hears their cry and saves them.” Psalms 145:19
DISASTER RELIEF UPDATE
2017 started with Hurricane Matthew relief effort heavily on our minds and heart. As we end 2017, we want to sincerely thank you, our ministry partners, for praying and partnering with ESMI. God’s faithfulness is clearly seen in how quickly the rebuilding effort was accomplished. To Him be the glory! Here are a few “before and after” photos:
-The University of Jeremie campus is completely rebuilt with an added second floor on the multi-purpose building for classrooms
-The Bonbon Church is rebuilt and functioning once again as a school and church
-18 widow’s homes rebuilt
Evangelism: Church Planting and Leadership Development
-In December, MTW missionaries Garry and Anita Chambers conducted a “Pastor and His Wife” retreat in Jeremie with about 30 couples from Grand-Anse (Jeremie), Gonaives and Cayes. This was an encouraging way to end the pastoral training in Haiti for 2017
-In October the inauguration service of Reformed Church of Haiti (RCH) 4th presbytery in the Central Plateau department/state
-ESMI Radio, 92.1 FM, went on air in November and is reaching the Grand-Anse area with the Gospel. We see this also as a vehicle for disaster preparedness.
-In June, about 100 couples were married at the El Shaddai Church, Versailles (Jeremie)
-Major ministry partner has pledged to assist ESMI in building 14 churches in Haiti within the next year.
-Christmas Catalog: Thanks to all who selected special gifts from the catalog which will assist families and churches still recovering from Hurricane Matthew. The “Billy Goat Project” mentioned below is one such project.
-Special thanks to all our short-term mission volunteers. How we appreciate your partnership in sharing the Gospel in practical ways!
-ESMI/University of Jeremie (UJ) has partnered with the University of Iowa in the Schools of Nursing and Business and actively pursuing partnership with another US university in the field of agriculture
-18 UJ fifth-year nursing students are currently in Port-au-Prince doing their practicum in psychiatry
Economical Development = Empowerment = Maintaining Personal Dignity
-One of ESMI’s newest partners, Just Hope International, partnered with ESMI and the University of Jeremie to provide small business loans to 24 UJ students. Just Hope leaders then went on to implement a similar business loan program for 25 widows in Jeremie and will begin another in Cayes in February 2018.
-Billy Goat Project: This was started in the Bonbon Church to assist the church members after Hurricane Matthew. How this works? A special breed of “expensive” billy goats were bought for the community along with 20 female goats for 20 families. With these “special” billy goats, the female goats are expected to breed at least 6 kids within the year. Each family will give one kid to ESMI to give to other families in the community. The other 5 kids, when raised, can be sold to assist the families financially. The 5 “Billy Goats” will continue to do their job in serving the Bonbon community.
Thank you once again for your continued prayers and financial partnership in the ministry of the Gospel. A blessed New Year to you and your family and we look forward to what God has in store for 2018! May we all be found faithfully advancing God’s kingdom for His glory!
